Statement regarding the BEC’s decision to reject Călin Georgescu’s candidacy

Monica Dorhoi, PhD

The Central Electoral Bureau’s (BEC) decision to reject Călin Georgescu’s candidacy is a significant moment in Romania’s electoral process. In a democratic state, it is essential that all decisions by electoral institutions are respected and contested through legal mechanisms provided by law, not through violence or incitement.

Any candidate has the right to appeal the BEC’s decision to the Constitutional Court, and this procedure must take place within a framework of legality and transparency. At the same time, incitement to violence undermines the democratic process and compromises political debate.

We await clarification from the Constitutional Court; however, we emphasize that respecting the rule of law and democratic processes must remain a priority for all political actors and their supporters.
